Kickstarting Team Culture: Lessons from Day One of Training Camp

Setting the Tone for Success Through Everyday Actions

Today marks the first day of training camp—a fresh start, new faces, and a unique opportunity to shape our team's culture from the ground up. As we gathered this morning, I was reminded that true team strength isn't born from one person's leadership, but from everyone taking ownership. When each of us commits to making a difference, our culture becomes strong and resilient. But if we all wait for someone else to step up, it's easy for things to fall apart.

So, as we dive into camp, they were reminded to think about one small act you can take to boost our team's energy tomorrow. Can you encourage a teammate who's struggling? Will you align your words with your actions, showing integrity both on and off the deck? Maybe you'll offer focus during those messy moments or speak up to break the silence when communication lags. Even choosing to call up a teammate—lifting them higher—instead of calling them out can make a world of difference.

Remember, team culture isn't just a slogan—it's a habit. It's built by the actions you repeat, the behaviors you accept, and yes, even the things you choose to ignore. Day one sets the foundation; let’s make every action count. Here's to building a culture we can all be proud of this training camp!

One unique camp note was the new water bottle each team member received.  Its design was to emulate a football helmet like at programs from Ohio State and or Michigan, Stickers will be added to their water bottles and will emphasize recognition of individual effort and team contributions.  Leadership, dedication and positive impact will all play a role. Creating the culture of team and leadership while fostering a sense of pride and accountability within the group and themselves.  I think there will be more to come on this water bottle.
